INTRODUCTION TO GYOR


is the most important city of northwest Hungary. It is the capital of Győr – Moson – Sopron county. It lies between Budapest and Vienna. The city is the sixth largest in Hungary and one of the seven main regional centres of the country. Today Győr is one of the most important administrative and cultural centres of Hungary. The city is also a university town and a popular tourist destination.

HOW TO GET THERE


You can get there from the M1 motorway at Győr. Győr has the fastest railway connection with Budapest. With InterCity trains you can reach it in a bit more than 1 hour 15 minutes. Gyor is also easily reachable by train from the surrounding countries - from Bratislava and from Vienna. Your journey would take approx. 75 minutes by bus from Bratislava.

The Basilica

Bishops Castle and Episcopal Palace

Its oldest parts are the lower section of the tower castle.

Saint Ladislaus' Herm

In inside there is goldsmith masterpiece. This is the only authentic representation of a king of the Árpád-dynasty.


Gyõr Diocesan Treasury and Library and Lapidary

The treasury typically consists of liturgical objects; the donors - bishops and aristocrats - donated valuable goldsmith masterpieces and textile garnitures to the church.

Lutheran Church

Address: 9025 Gyõr, Petõfi tér

The church is characterised by its pleasant proportions. Another treasure of the church is the baptistery, standing in front of the altar. On its bell-shaped cover there is a small group of cast statues showing the baptism of Jesus.


Ark of the Covenant

is one of the most beautiful relics of Gyõr from the age of baroque stands in Gutenberg Square.


Calvary

The hill used to be burial place for Celts, later for Romans. The Calvary was built by the Jesuits.

The Esterházy Palace is the residence of the City Art Museum and locality of the International Drawing and Graphics Biennal.

Private collection of the Petz family - medical history, exhibition of the fine arts and of the applied arts. There is an exhibition of Hungarian postage stamps, from the first issues up to the 80´s.

Diocesan Treasure, Library and Lapidary

The Treasury houses masterpieces of gold- and silversmithery, liturgical gems, and textiles, showing the religious art of western Hungary from the Gothic period until the 19th century. There are the earliest printed books and a collection of old Hungarian books in the Library.

WHAT TO DO


There are a lot of places where the visitors can spend their holiday or relaxation for example the Szigetköz water-land and the Pannonhalma Hills.

THE BATH OF MEETING
The bath is located on the headland at the junction of Mosoni-Danube and Rába rivers. There is seasonal open-air bath too. The bath of meetings offers appropriate services for each generation. Thermal water of alkali-hydrogen carbonate and chloride can be classified as iodian medicinal water. Gyõr medicinal waters are highly recommended for those suffering from detritional bone and joint diseases and chronic inflammatory joint and muscle disorder. Chronic inflammatory gynaecological patients and those fighting against chronic bronchitis or pulmonary emphysema may also enjoy the healing effect of the medicinal waters, which may also be used for a water cure. There are five pools and two water-slides, one of the 64 metres and one of the 38 metres. Children can play in a separate pool. There are a water-fall, a wild water-canal, a cascade with a cave and a jacuzzi too.


THERMAL BATH
It includes two pools filled with medicinal waters (32 C° and 38C°) and a thermal pool (28 °C) with massage in horizontal position.

SAUNA GARDEN
